Happy Earth Day! Today is more than just a celebration of our planet—it’s a global call to action. At HostDime, we’ve been answering that call for over two decades by engineering our green data centers with sustainability at the core. From solar-powered facilities to advanced cooling systems, we believe the future of infrastructure must also be a future of environmental responsibility.
We’re not just participating in the green data center movement—we’re helping lead it. Here’s how our commitment to sustainability continues to evolve in 2025.
☀️ Brazil’s Solar-Powered Data Center
HostDime’s João Pessoa, Brazil facility is now fully powered by a dedicated solar farm. Completed last year, the $1.2 million (R$5.5M) investment generates 122,500 kWh per month, which covers the data center’s current 1.2MW demand and supports an additional 30% capacity expansion.
Built on a 15-acre site with over 2,000 photovoltaic panels spanning 130,100 square feet, this solar initiative now offsets the equivalent energy consumption of over 800 Brazilian households every single month. For more information on our solar panel farm, read here.
❄️ Aisle Containment = Less Energy, More Efficiency
Traditional data centers waste energy by allowing hot and cold air to mix. We engineered a hot aisle containment system that passively redirects hot exhaust air straight to the cooling units. This reduces the need for active cooling and helps maintain ideal environmental conditions.
After implementing this system, we shut down two 30-ton CRAC units with zero performance loss. The results:
-
Reduced energy usage
-
Uniform air temperature
-
Fewer hot spots
-
More efficient cooling per cabinet
Clean Air, Tier IV Generators
Backup power is critical for uptime—but not at the cost of air quality. That’s why we’ve replaced legacy Tier II diesel generators with EPA-certified Tier IV generators at our facilities.
These modern units reduce:
-
Nitrogen Oxide emissions by 90%
-
Particulate matter by over 90%
These Tier IV generators keep our facilities online during outages while drastically cutting harmful emissions—helping protect the air in our surrounding communities.
☀️ Rooftop Solar Panels: Our Orlando HQ Goes Green
We’re putting every square foot of our new 2025 Orlando headquarters and data center to work—including the roof. High-density solar panels will cover the rooftop, generating clean energy to offset up to 25% of the facility’s power usage.
This isn’t just symbolic. It’s a scalable solution that reduces grid dependency, stabilizes energy costs, and slashes our carbon footprint—right in the heart of Central Florida. Grand opening Q3 2025—stay tuned.
♻️ Server Lifecycle: From Heavy Lifting to Responsible Retirement
At HostDime, we maximize the life of our equipment and ensure secure, ethical recycling when it reaches end-of-life.
The three-stage process:
-
Production servers handle high-performance workloads
-
Secondary servers are used for testing and development
-
End-of-life servers are securely wiped and recycled
We’ve partnered with Orlando Recycles, who performs a double-wipe process:
-
HostDime initiates the first wipe after service cancellation
-
Orlando Recycles completes a one-pass data overwrite, ensuring no recoverable data is left behind
All reusable components are re-marketed or ethically recycled, reducing landfill waste and promoting responsible reuse.
Building a Sustainable Digital Future
At HostDime, we know that building the future of infrastructure comes with a responsibility to protect the planet. Our green initiatives aren’t side projects—they’re central to how we design, build, and operate data centers across the globe.
From solar power and clean air generators to energy-efficient cooling and end-of-life recycling, we’re proving that cutting-edge technology and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
